This climb is one of Tasmania's classic days out with 350 metres of climbing on Mount Roland in northwest Tasmania.Views down over the rich farm land and across into the Overland Track enrich the experience. Cradle Mountain and Barn Bluff - seemingly within touching distance on a clear day - dominate the landscape to the west. Notionally grade 12, you can take a number of variations along the way to make things a little more interesting if you wish. The rock is conglomerate so if you do this route you will get to climb on something a bit different from the norm. Descent is via rappel via the narrow gully to the left of the route. Enjoy!

  1. Great pics, would like to have a go next year, what can you recommend in terms of gear and other consideration? Cheers

  2. Hi John

Pick a day with a great forecast - for the views as much as climber comfort. Double ropes are useful due to the wandering nature of the route. However, rapping the gully on a single is definitely the way to go so you don't get your ropes tangled amongst the trees. Also allows you to rig the next rap while your partner is completing the previous one. A light rack should be enough; no need for any really small gear. Enjoy a great day out and be sure to post a trip report when you're done.

    Cheers

    Doug

BTW, if you want to see a great bunch of photos of climbing around Tassie through the ages there will be a slideshow at Cradle Mtn to commemorate the 100th anniversary of roped climbing in Tasmania. Be sure to let Tony know if you're coming.
