Was up there today for the first time in over twenty years, climbing a couple of old classics. Couldn't help but notice that the "way" across to the top of the gully from where you leave the route down to the Columns has become pretty overgrown, not having been subjected to ministrations from the Ministry of Tracks. Tony and I added a couple of cairns to help mark the way down to the steel pole and across towards the top of the gully.

A couple of questions for you lot out there in Rock Cyberworld:

  • have you been to the area in recent times?
  • if not, would you more likely go across to do a route or two if the route was clearer and more obvious, perhaps with a signpost as well as some track clearing?
  • There are three good routes close together (L-R: Ceci N'est pas etc; Suzerain, Built Like a Donkey) that would be much easier and quicker to access if there was a rap station at the top of Suzerain. Would you be more likely to climb either of them if a new rap station was to be installed there?
  • Does anyone know anything about the tagged project to the left of Turkey Slap? I gather it's been there for a while so … is anyone still working it, or what?

Reactions?

  1. The tagged project is one Jon and I worked on a couple of seasons ago. It is still on the list, just need to build up some strength, endurance and technique...

  2. The easiest way to reach the metal pole avoiding vegetation is to go down the new orange tag track until it heads L toward the columns and amphitheatre. From here there is flat open area on the R with only knee deep bauera etc. Go across this to the boulder field and head diagonally down across the boulders to the metal pole. This is easy scrambling and on boulders. From the pole head toward Upper Tierdrop gully. But don't forget the Arena not far  below which has quite a few good trad. climbs.

  3. Just goat for it...

  4. I think a couple of cairns would help. I've been there a few times recently, every time going a different way!
But a rap station at the top of Suzerain isn't really needed, as they are only two minutes scramble from the rap near Ano's Sojourn.

  5. Its possibly an easier approach to go down the fence line of the communications tower enclosure (as for upper fools), and head towards constitution dock. Less scree that way for sure.

  6. Hi Doug, Yes a rap point there would be good. Like Topher, I often find I'm going a different way each time.  I'm doubtful about cairns though as they have one big problem: just because you find a cairn it doesn't necessarily tell you that you are on the right route (there are loads of cairns up there).  A technical solution is to get the TheSarvo GPS points able to be exported as a single file that could be put on any smart-phone to use with a GPS app (I have been getting good value out of a $3 one called "Handy GPS").  I am hoping that Nerm can do that sometime??

Hi Rog. I can convert the the TheSarvo GPS points to kml. quick and easy (if they're not already) and ready to use in most all smart phone mapping apps. Would probably suggest creating a seperate file for each crag (perhaps even each buttress somewhere like the pipes). Anyway give me a call if you and the wider TheSarvo community want to discuss further.

    Cheers
