hello. my little canon camera went base jumping without a parachute off Japhlion the other day. i couldn't see where it landed. but it seemed most like it would have ended  on the vegetation on the ledge at the base of the route... i rapped off and had a look for it to no avail but i can't imagine it would bounce over the ledge... please keep an eye out for it if heading to japhlion or pniesses. Especially near the veg on far  climbers right of this vegetated ledge as i didn't check so thoroughly there. it was in a grey case  i think with BD biner attached. i doubt it survived the bounces but i'm mostly keen on the memory card and concomittant happysnaps..

Glen Kowalik

Glen died on Thursday  last week after a long period of ill health. He was an early member of the Climbers Club and climbed extensively in Tasmania with new routes ranging across the State from the classic Zorro at Rocky Cape in the far North West to the Cocks Comb on La Perouse in the far south.  He was an experienced alpinist having climbed in Europe and New Zealand,  and worked for the Antarctic Division as a Field Training Officer and as Station Leader on Macquarie Island. His climbing career was cut short by heart disease and he was an early recipient of a heart transplant. Not to be defeated, he resumed work till very recently as a bushwalking guide in Tasmania, and visited both Nepal and India.

Vale Glen, you will be much missed.

It looks as though the traditional access route to Rocky Tom, via Flagstaff Gully, has been closed by the owners of the quarry - a couple of notes have been left on cars etc.

However it seems that access to the cliffs themselves isn't an issue and access is still ok via Geilston Creek Rd.

I've updated the guides - Rocky Tom & Rocky Tom bouldering to only mention this access route, but it probably needs more work in describing how to get from Seagar Saddle to the various buttresses. And also making sure that the parking and first bit of the access route at Geilston Bay Rd isn't going to cause any issues. If anyone is up there, it may be worth taking some notes and/or GPS points.

If anyone has any trouble accessing via this route please post here. 

hey. last week tim and i had a fab couple of days tradding about freycinet.

we climbed a nice looking line  immediately to the right of 'Titus groan' on Mt Amos north face. After looking at the topo photo we thought it maybe  an undescribed climb. although looking at the guide descriptions now it maybe  Gormenghast. has anyone done this route???? and it is kinda  'obvious'.

Its just the description for Gormenghast doesn't quite match....  my current inclination is to modify the gormenghast description but i may be operating from a presumptive position...

i put a line on the topo photo in the guide.and may add a clarifying topo photo for this wall later.

Either way  it goes at about 14 and is one of the nicer easy routes around. Varied climbing and a full 50m pitch with reasonable gear.. minor run-out at start.

My wife & I are going to be in Tasmania next week and are hoping to do some climbing.  Can anyone recommend a (good) gear shop in Hobart?  Place to get carrot bolt hangers, maps, some beta perhaps etc.  Google search shows "Jolly Swagman" but that seems to be more camping oriented & some climbing gym(s) which usually don't have much gear for sale (at least in the US).

Is there any brave man or woman to come with me to Totem Pole?

I came all the way from Finland to do that. You could have a good piece of memory from that trip because I am going to film the climb.

Of course we have to know each others first because it is an epic climb. Videos tells more than words. So you can look some videos I have made:

I will leave Tasmania 2.12. So I have two weeks time to do that but sooner is better.

Ihave all trad gears for that and 70m single rope so you need to bring at least one rope more.
