South Hobart MTB

This page has info about trails around South Hobart and surrounding suburbs. For more trails in the Hobart area see

S56

Starts at the end of Bracken Lane (the road, not the fire trail) and heads down to Huon Road near Halls Saddle.

S57

Start on Huon Road a few hundred metres before the junction with Strickland Avenue at the road marker with S57 and H4 on it. At the log ride either go left or right. Left is steep switch backs, right is more flowing and has several large jumps.
Both join the Gorse Track at the bottom.

Gorse Track

Start near the top of Strickland Avenue opposite where the Rivulet Fire Trail comes out. Besides one decent sized drop the track is relatively easy single track. Where the track meets Strikland Ave again keep going along the firetrail. After a km or two take the first decent track on the left, which heads back down to Cascade Road.

America Ridge aka The Luge

Starts off the Main Fire Trail, a couple of hundred metres from the junction with Strickland Avenue at a flat grassy area. A fast flowing single track follows the ridge and comes out on Old Farm Road, which then leads to Cascade. A great track, but can get a little washed out and bumpy at times.

Waterworks

There is some nice easy rides in the waterworks reserve. From Halls Saddle at Ferntree follow the Pipeline track down into the reserve. Eventually you come out into a grassy area (McDermotts Saddle). Turn right here on to an easy 4wd track that leads to the bottom of the reserve, or turn left onto a single track that goes up over the hill and then down to Gentle Annie Falls. From the bottom of the falls go left on to a sandy single track that heads down the hill. The 4wd track is also one of the better ways to ride up to fern tree.

Knocklofty

There are a few firetrails and walking tracks in the Knocklofty Reserve that make OK riding. There is a short rocky downhill track from the very summit. There is some good single track to explore over the back of the hill, on the hill rising up from Noah's Saddle.

Mt Nelson

Directions for the Mt Nelson DH track from rhythm_mtb:
Starting at the signal station and looking at the Eastern Shore you head down a small track to the left of a viewing platform (looks out over town). Take the next left and ride along the fence line. Go straight over the next fire road onto some narrow winding single track. This should bring you to another crusty old fire road. About 5-10m along this is a turn off on the right onto singletrack again. If you ride down 2 small rock outcrops your on the right track. Just after these is a narrow walking track that runs along the ridge. Go straight over this and you're set. You can't loose the track from here. You should come out in a grassy field at the bottom of the valley, right smack on Churchill Ave, just down the hill from Red Chappel Ave.
The track described above is pretty hard. There is an easier variation if you go straight ahead instead of taking the first left. This joins the main track lower down where its not as steep.

Tolmans Hill

From red dog on pedalbite
Head up the Southern Outlet, and take a left as if you were heading to Mt. Nelson. Take a right and head towards the fast developing housing area. Park the vehicle as close as possible to the first driveway on the left.
This first steep driveway is the entry point.
Its a bit of a push up the driveway onto a gravel road. Head down this road for about 200m, once you reach the top of the climb. Take a left down what seems to be an old overgrown fire road. Take a right 100m down this road, the entry is slightly over grown so be on the look out.
The top of the track is flowwing, and once you get into the track, it starts off with some tigh twists and turns, and some of the old burms are still present. This continues on for a little while, and then the track opens up a little, then back to tight twisting turns. Then the track takes a steep downward change, with some more corners and small obstacles.
Nothing on the track is difficult, and only one 3-4 foot drop is in the track. But its a good little track to do when your sick of the same old stuff. Once the track flattens out, it then heads into a slight rocky area. This area is just above the water works, and caps off a short filled, but fun ride.
I'd recomend to do it a night once you've done it in daylight, as the tight corners and overgrown trees make it slightly more difficult to encounter each turn.
