Just noticed that some artistic individuals have chosen to paint the cliff up at Waterworks. Not sure how much it will affect the climbs, but it certainly hasn't improved the aesthetics of the place. I ran past there yesterday and it was clean then, so I'm assuming that it happened last night.

  1. No anger here, just amazed by the stupidity of some people.

  2. Yeah.  Weird.

Suggestion (although I have no expertise in graffiti removal): I am pretty sure that CCT could fund a few tins of the citrus-based paint stripper and a few wire-brushes.  Unless someone else knows of a better fix?  It may be easier to remove while the paint is still fresh.  Jed Parkes or Steve Goss would be able to give the OK on some expenditure.

  3. That's pretty shit. However "fuck off you smelly hippies" is a good name for a route. Someone's mad?

HCC must know the best way to get rid of graffiti

  4. I always thought that hanging arete at the left end of the crag between the 17's and the 12 is another classic waiting to be extracted from Waterworks. Sounds like the name is already sorted!

Anyway, what's the best way forward? I agree that HCC are probably best placed to remove it with one of their magical graffiti removal vans, but if that's not an option, I'm willing to do some brushing.

  5. I've sent an email to Jill H and Carrie at HCC to ask who to talk to. Carrie is going to follow it up.

  6. Nice one, thanks Jon.

  7. From Carrie:

Council officers have been out to have a look at the graffiti at Waterworks. They intend to start on removing it tomorrow.

  8. That's great news. Another example of the terrific support climbers are getting from the Hobart City Council.

  9. I ran past again at lunchtime today and it looks like they've cleaned up all of the low hanging stuff. The stuff half way up the cliff (the big splotches of paint thrown up there) have not been cleared up. Not sure if the HCC guys are going to be able to get up there easily?

  10. Was there yesterday evening and paint still quite soft - were paint bombs so glass is embedded in the paint.  With us was Haig Rice who manages spidertech - he is willing to lend his generator and long-hose high pressure cleaner (may be the only option) he also has some chemical products to spray on first.

If there is no objections by CCT - I am willing to do the work, will only need one other person to assist with managing generator and hoses et NOTE: am free tomorrow, Friday to do this. ( I can try contacting HCC, but I am doubting they will go up high to do the work!

    Tim

  11. Jon & Cameron,

I called HCC today and eventually got onto Bushland & Reserve section and spoke to the manager.   Apparently they were not aware that the section tasked to remove it did not complete the job etc.  Carrie will be notified of this and they intend to finish cleaning it - they are now also aware of the broken gate to fix also!  They seemed very willing to help out which is good

  12. Nice one Tim,

If HCC decide they can't do the high stuff, drop a message here and I'll see if I can come up and help (though the next week is not going to be much good for me).

    cheers

  13. Yesterday saw Spidertech working alongside the HCC to remove the high paint splatters. As much as possible it has been removed. There were many small pieces of glass still imbedded in the paint, and also some scattered beneath. (they threw beer bottles full of paint) So bearing that in mind be careful of pieces of glass beneath some of the routes as I'm sure there will be pieces we missed. As a fair bit of water was used to remove the paint, be vigilant for loose rock that may have been weakened by all that water. Happy climbing

  14. Nice one Youngy,

Thanks to Spidertech and the HCC. Good result. Haven't had a close inspection yet, but from the road, it looks infinitely better

  15. Great work guys.  Good to see the council prepared to help out on the clean up.
