THE Pinnacle Rd on Mt Wellington has been blocked by a boulder that fell near the roadside.

Police closed the road at the Springs about 5pm today because the massive rock, estimated to weigh up to 40 tonnes, was perched precariously by the road.

A Hobart City Council spokesman said a member of the public alerted authorities after hearing the rock crash through the bushes.

The road will remain closed tomorrow morning while geologists assess the danger posed by the rock.

PINNACLE Rd on Mt Wellington reopened to traffic this afternoon after experts determined a massive boulder did not pose a threat to passing traffic.

The boulder -- believed to weight between 40 to 60 tonnes -- rolled into bush above the popular tourist route yesterday.

Authorities closed Pinnacle Rd above the Springs about 5pm yesterday for safety reasons.

Hobart City Council Alderman Jeff Briscoe said a geologist was on site today to determine if the huge rock was potentially dangerous.

The road reopened to traffic this afternoon.
