Blog from February, 2014

Apparently there is a bike race up the hill that will close the mountain rd between 9 and 12 tomorrow.

Hey gang,

Lost a black Casio G shock watch at Freycinet, possibly above Lassie's Wall or carpark.

Much loved, fashionable, indestructable, built in alarm, coffee machine and shiatzu massager.

Reward offered,

Upper Teardrop Gully

Was up there today for the first time in over twenty years, climbing a couple of old classics. Couldn't help but notice that the "way" across to the top of the gully from where you leave the route down to the Columns has become pretty overgrown, not having been subjected to ministrations from the Ministry of Tracks. Tony and I added a couple of cairns to help mark the way down to the steel pole and across towards the top of the gully.

A couple of questions for you lot out there in Rock Cyberworld:

  • have you been to the area in recent times?
  • if not, would you more likely go across to do a route or two if the route was clearer and more obvious, perhaps with a signpost as well as some track clearing?
  • There are three good routes close together (L-R: Ceci N'est pas etc; Suzerain, Built Like a Donkey) that would be much easier and quicker to access if there was a rap station at the top of Suzerain. Would you be more likely to climb either of them if a new rap station was to be installed there?
  • Does anyone know anything about the tagged project to the left of Turkey Slap? I gather it's been there for a while so … is anyone still working it, or what?

Reactions?

Hi guys (Hobart),
i'm visiting Tassie from Canada and was hoping to get out to Mt. Wellington this afternoon. I have a car and can give a ride from Hobart. I know it's short notice but if anyone is psyched let me know. I would like to get on a route called Freedom and I would make it easy for my partner (you rap down or I could lower you to a huge ledge to belay. It's a well bolted sport route and should only take 30 minutes total to do. Then you could either jumar back out (I have gear) or you could try the route too (it's easy to pull past the crux on Top Rope if the moves are too hard). Then I would gladly give a belay on whatever else you migh want to try.

If interested call or text or email me.
Cheer,
Steve (from Canada)

The Hobart City Council is organising an  evening of entertainment to celebrate the purchase of the land at Fruehauf, and the extension of the linear park.

There will be a drumming band playing on the grass, a circus workshop for kids and hopefully climbing in the background. There will be 2 sets of music (drumming) with an ‘interval’ in which the circus guys will do an acrobatic show. The Council has asked if climbers would be part of it, giving a demo of climbing in the background - it could be a  good opportunity for people to talk to the climbers, possibly after the acrobatic show – just an informal chat with those interested.

Given the support we have had from Council so far, it would be good to help out  and a good opportunity to get positive publicity for the Club etc. Any one available on the day to climb and/or help out? Maybe we organise a BBQ or some such as a fund raiser  as well? A beer afterwards  might be in order as well......

In case of rain it would all be off of course

Tony

See the recent article in the Examiner with me, Andrew Martin and my daughter Jemimah doing some climbing in the Gorge.  http://www.examiner.com.au/story/2060788/learning-the-ropes-photos/#slide=1

The Wellington Trust is after exceptional photos of climbers for a display board in the renovated Visitors Lookout on the summit. Have you any? Standing on top of Arthurs Tomb? Or of someone climbing it? Or... ? They want to use some we have on thesarvo but I have pointed out the ones they have chosen are 40yr old.....

Only need a couple.

Urgent....they want them now. Contact me if you can help via thesarvo and I will arrange to collect, forward, whatever

Oatlands caves almost dry

Thought this might interest a couple people on here.

Have been to Oatlands quite a lot again lately and as of this week, the Devils Kitchenette and the Devils Kitchen main cave are more or less dry.

Nevertheless, for the next couple of weeks or so, until the ground dries up completely, bringing a tarp to protect your pads from the mud would be a great idea.

Attached is a pic, shot from the Right Side looking towards the Antichrist Area, and as you can see there is only one little puddle of water left.

Have many more pictures from basically every other area surrounding the lake so just let me know the area you are interested in and I'll post a pic.

Another beautiful day on Mt Wellington today and our mountain - the people's mountain - was just teeming with folks. On the way up we passed heaps of road cyclists on their way up and down, there were four pairs of climbers on the the southern end of the Organ Pipes and at least one other party somewhere (maybe more if some were at Lost World or had accessed the Pipes from the top) and hikers strolling around. On our way down the road was crowded with other motorists and The Springs was chockers with picnickers and mountain bikers. None of these people seemed to be missing the intrusion of a cable car. It was just the sort of day that reinforced how lucky we are to have what we've got, and that we don't need another, more convenient form of access - one which will cut an intrusive swathe across the front of the mountain.

In our little state of lock-step political thinking and view towards development, Pink Floyd's anti-establishment anthem "We don't need no education" strikes a chord for me:

We could just do a little substitution here ...

We don't need no cable car
We don't need no road control
No dark dealings in the boardroom
You lot, leave them Pipes alone!

Hey, you lot, leave them Pipes alone!

All in all it's just more sleazy clutter
All in all you're just more sleazy clutter

I guess, given that the only way there will be a cable car is if it goes straight up over the Organ Pipes with an ugly swathe cut through the forest below, I'm dead against it.

would you like to climb in March - probably be there last 2 weeks?

I am an experienced trad climber, hoping to climb about grade 16-20

love to hear from you!

"PROPONENTS of a Mt Wellington cable car are considering a route across the face of the Organ Pipes.

Mt Wellington Cableway Company executive director Adrian Bold said taking the cable car as close as possible to the iconic rock structure could be the best option.
